Students Win Deregulation Defeated

The government today are announcing the shelving of one of their core polices, university fee deregulation and will not be pursuing the legislation for the next year.

NUS President Rose Steele said “This is a welcome announcement however, make no mistake this has been a 2 year long campaign with students across Australia, the National Tertiary Education Union and the larger Australian community against these so called reforms”

We have seen a self-inflicted emergency state put on universities by this liberal government and we have stood up to it.”

Education changes lives so to introduce a policy which would see those who cannot afford $100k degrees unable to come to university is an elitist policy and a travesty to Australian society.

We believe in a fair go and this policy at its core is unfair.

This has been a 2 year long campaign with students across Australia, the National Tertiary Education Union and the wider Australian community.

Education must remain affordable and accessible.

Universities in Australia must be properly funded and of a high quality. They are not corporations but unique institutions that make an immeasurable contribution to our society. We will continue to work with the sector and the government to ensure that university education is fair, affordable and of high quality.
