New South Wales (NSW)

Michael Murdocca

NUS New South Wales State Branch President

The NSW Branch of NUS has traditionally been one of the most active and visible in the country. This year our main focus will be on running the Demand a Better Future campaign around the federal government’s higher education reforms, talking to students and holding events about how these policies will make a first-class university education more inaccessible to more students, especially those from low-SES backgrounds. We also plan to engage on other issues around higher education, including SSAF funding and making our campuses safer and more inclusive.

Already this year, the branch has had contingents to the March 4 Your Rights Rally and the International Women’s Day march. We’ve also actively protested against the Federal Education Minister Christopher Pyne during a talk in Sydney. These events have been aimed at building the movement in the lead up to the NDA on March 25th and continuing with the tradition of NUS grassroots activism.

We’ll be active on all campuses around NSW, running stalls and events, and talking to students about the issues that matter to them. A major focus will be to build the presence of NUS on our small and regional campuses, as well as to keep students engaged with the campaign to Demand a Better Future, and to remind students of the importance of being active in their student unions as part of the ongoing fight to make education more accessible and equal.
